Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo
The Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo isn’t just for the young, but also for the young at heart.
The Children’s Zoo features educational and interactive exhibits that connect families with nature. Since opening in 2000, the Children’s Zoo has received numerous awards and has served as a model for other children’s zoos across the country.
Families can spend hours in the Children’s Zoo playing, exploring, learning and interacting with animals of all shapes and sizes.
Travis & Zach’s Birds Landing
Travis & Zach’s Birds Landing is an attractive garden with trees, shrubs, and birdbaths carved into boulders. This unique, interactive aviary gives guests the opportunity to feed worms and seeds to almost two dozen different species of birds from around the globe.
Cost: Free to enter; $1 to purchase a seed stick or cup meal worms
JCPenney Discovery House and A.H. Belo Discovery Yard
Built for the Zoo’s youngest guests, play is encouraged here. Guests can experience nature play opportunities, complete puzzles, play games and enjoy new and unique activities created by our interpretive staff.
Visit the JCPenney Discovery House every day for animal encounters at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Splish, splash and play! The Stream is the ideal setting for a cool break and playtime. On warmer days, children can play and splash in the “creek” running through rock boulders while parents rest their heels.
The Stream is surrounded by a play area featuring a giant bouncy spider web, crawl-through tortoise shells, an enormous bird’s nest, a hollow tree with slide and other play structures.
Nature Play Space
The Nature Play Space is a playground inspired by the wonders of the natural world. Children can climb on boulders and logs, build secret hideaways, create nature art and even make a mud pie. This play area engages your child’s emotional, social and physical senses while encouraging empathy towards the natural world.
Get your hands dirty and explore the Nature Play Space in the Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo near the koi pond and barn.
Interact with goats, sheep, chickens, and other farm animals in this very hands-on area!
Get up close with dwarf mongoose, hornbills, naked mole-rats and more in our crawl-through tunnel.
Hillcrest Foundation Nature Exchange
